AU has many preparatory level courses (designated by a number in the 100s) to prepare you for university-level study. Program students should discuss with an advisor how you can incorporate these courses into your program plan.

- COMM100 - Introduction to Research and Study Skills: Improve the academic skills you need to be a successful student. A great first course if you have not completed any university or distance education courses.

- ENGL140 – Grammar: A review of grammatical structure and use.
- ENGL143 – Writing for Academic Purposes: Learn an approach to the writing of sentences, paragraphs and essays.
- ENGL146 – Reading for Academic Purposes: Reading practice to improve comprehension and efficiency.
- ENGL155 – Developing Writing Skills: Improve your reading and writing.
- ENGL177 – English for Academic Purposes: Learn to succeed in complex reading, writing and listening tasks.
- ENGL189 – English for Business: An introduction to business communications.
French
- FREN100 - French for Beginners I: Introduction to the basics of French.
- FREN101 - French for Beginners II: Continuation of the basics of French.
Indigenous Studies
- INST111 - Introductory Cree I: An introduction to Plains Cree.
- INST112 - Introductory Cree II: Continuation of an introduction to Plains Cree.
Math
- MATH100 - Developmental Mathematics: This course is intended as a review of basic mathematics.
- MATH101 - Transitional Mathematics: This course is intended for students who have recently graduated from high school with Applied Mathematics 30 and wish to upgrade their mathematics skills before or while attending a post-secondary institution.
Philosophy
- PHIL152 - Basic Critical Thinking: This course focuses on reading and writing comprehension skills. The course teaches an active, critical approach to written work.
