What You Need To Know

International Students

Thank you for your interest in Athabasca University

Athabasca University is strictly a distance education university and, as such, students remain in their home communities while studying with us. Athabasca University is not a good candidate for students who are trying to obtain a study authorization for the purposes of entering Canada. That is because we are a distance education provider and you can complete our courses from home. For this reason, the Office of the Registrar usually does not issue a Letter of Acceptance for this purpose.

Other kinds of general information about Athabasca University can  be found by utilizing the "AskAU" links distributed throughout our web site.

Having said that, Athabasca University certainly welcomes international students. As a non-resident of Canada, you may enroll in a program of study that leads to a university credential, provided you have satisfied the entrance requirements and have the Registrar's approval. You must complete Athabasca University's General Application Form, indicating your program of choice. You must also submit the one-time non-refundable fee.

Alternatively, you may also apply as an unclassified or non-program student. To register for courses, visit Athabasca University's Course Registration page. Please do not forget to check Athabasca University's Fee Schedule.

Note: Your course will officially start two months after you register. This delay allows adequate time for the arrival of your course materials. All course materials are shipped at the University's expense. You are entitled to Athabasca University's normal contract period to complete your course; but you will not be granted additional time due to postal or other delays. However, you may apply for regular extensions that are available to all Athabasca University students.

Questions? Please visit Athabasca University's online Calendar for more information. You may also request a Calendar to be sent you.
